Is your paper empty?

Many of you have heard or participated in conversations with some faculty members about going to college, future jobs, etc.

One thing I would like for you to begin doing is considering how good you look on paper. Look at the two students below:

Student A
3.5 GPA, 24 on ACT

3.1 GPA, 21 on ACT

Participated in Marching Band for 6 years.
Participated in ROTC for 4 years.
Participated in Girls Basketball for 4 years.
Elected Secretary of Class of 2012.

Founding Member of the MTHS Thespian Club.

If you were a college recruiter, who would you want? Who looks more impressive for your school? Remember, colleges don't want "just smart kids". GRADES ARE TREMENDOUSLY IMPORTANT. However, colleges and universities are going to pursue students who are active in their schools, because chances are they will remain active at their university. They want people who are going to set themselves apart from the crowd. What are you doing to be different? What are you doing to market yourself to college admissions officers, recruiters, future employers?

The world is full of talented, smart people. Is that what makes you special? No, it's what you are DOING with those talents and "smarts" that matter.

So fill out a piece of paper.....

Wow....talk about a busy week last week! This week will only be longer. Here is the quick rundown.

Saturday, March 3- Odyssey of the Mind competition. Baseball will play at 9:00 am at Marked Tree. If they win, they will travel to Lepanto for an 11:00 p.m. game.

Sunday, March 4

Monday, March 5- School-wide faculty meeting to discuss the findings of the AdvancEd visit. "Playa" Club practice at 4:00, possibly.

Tuesday, March 6- Jr. Literacy Exam

Wednesday, March 7- Jr. Literacy Exam.

Thursday, March 8- 8th grade will have their scoliosis screening. FFA competition.

Friday, March 9-

Saturday, March 10- Quiz bowl Regional Tourney at 10:00

Basketball

Been a busy week, but I wanted to take a second to update everyone on our basketball situation.

First, our girls did not win their first round game. While I don't believe in moral victories, I want our girls to realize a couple of things.

1. This is the first time in years our girls' program has been to the state tourney. Why does that matter? My 3rd year of coaching baseball at Marked Tree, we advanced to the state tournament for the first time in almost 20 years. They have been every year since. Success breeds success. That was a huge first step for our program. You took it. Next year, take another step....win conference, win regional....add to those expectations.

2. What the difference in common and uncommon people? I don't think it's talent. The world is full of talented people.....good basketball players, good teachers, good principals, or good doctors. There are very few who are great. The difference doesn't lie in ability, it lies in effort. Recognize the effort you put in this year, recognize what effort you put into your offseason.....and do more. Your effort was great. Now, push yourself to another level. I want you to know that your effort must come in more avenues that athletics, it must also bleed into every other aspect in your life. That's when it becomes habit.

3. Most importantly (for me), young ladies, is for you to know I'm proud of you.

As far as our boys, well, I'm about to go load up and drive the bus to see them play Junction City at 8:30. Hopefully, we will get to the semifinals tonight.

I better go....I'm going to be late.

On February 10th, 2012, we received news that our FCCLA received a grant in the amount of $54,000! This money will be to purchase equipment that will assist our program starting up.

9 Weeks Test Schedule

On March 15th (Thrusday), we will have periods 2, 4, 6 and 8 tests.

On March 16th (Friday), we will have periods 1, 3, 5, and 7 tests.

These tests will be a regular class period.

At the very same time, the acquisition of knowledge has been forever transformed by the Internet. Often overlooked in the rush to waste time at Facebookand YouTube is the fact that the Internet is the most efficient and powerfulinformation delivery system ever developed.
The change in the economy and the delivery of information online combine toamplify the speed of change. These rapid cycles are overwhelming the ability ofthe industrialized system of education to keep up.

As a result, the education-industrial system, the one that worked very well increating a century’s worth of factory workers, lawyers, nurses, and soldiers, isnow obsolete.

We can prop it up or we can fix it.

I don’t think it’s practical to say, “We want what we’ve been getting, but cheaperand better.” That’s not going to happen, and I’m not sure we want it to, anyway.

We need school to produce something different, and the only way for that tohappen is for us to ask new questions and make new demands on every elementof the educational system we’ve built.

No, we do not need to create compliance.

No, we do not need memorization.

And no, we do not to teach students to embrace the status quo.

Anything a school does to advance those three agenda items is not just a waste ofmoney, but actually works against what we do need. The real shortage we face isdreams, and the wherewithal and the will to make them come true.

No tweaks. A revolution."

Quick Update

First, it give me pleasure to tell everyone that one of our seniors, Jagger McCrary, has been notified that he has received a $56,000 scholarship to Lyon College. Jagger is a model student and we couldn't be more proud of him.

Second, our basketball teams have concluded the regional tourney with the boys winning over Riverside and our girls losing a heartbreaker to Marmaduke. Below is their bracket.

Boys are the team represented by 3N. Girls are represented by 4N. I will have an updated bracket with teams when AAA makes it available. Click here to see the bracket.

This Week at MTHS and 9 Weeks Test Schedule

Today, our mock trial team traveled to Jonesboro for their trial against Jonesboro High School. The young men and women in their dresses and suits looked wonderful. As I type this, Mr. Braden Pharis is making his opening statement for our team. Here's to hoping he does great....

Our basketball teams play in the consolation games at Regional Tournament today (Saturday) at 12:00 and 1:30 at Monette.

Our Odyssey of the Mind team will practice today from 2-4 p.m.

There are many things our kids and teachers do that make me proud. But one of them is participating in school events while school isn't going on. This isn't because I don't want our students missing school for activities (which I do try to avoid), but I personally believe that if we are to impact the lives of our students in a positive manner, we must keep them focused and engaged in activities. We must find ways to keep them participating in positives like the school dances some of our clubs have, Odyssey of the Mind, sports, FBLA practice, Quiz Bowl, and Drama Club (just to know a few). By giving kids school related activities to have during after school hours, we allow those positives to give them something to do. Sure beats sitting at home, checking Facebook non-stop, or sitting around and texting.

At the time of this post, I can't tell you the dates and times of our basketball teams games in the state tourney. The AAA should have the brackets updated and available tomorrow, so I will check and update ASAP.

As for the rest of the week.....

Monday- Drama Club Practice from 3:30 until 4:30. I can't wait to show you what this group is doing!

Are You There? Can You Hear Me? Can You Hear Me Now?

There has been a great amount of interest in this blog. A few people have commented how much they appreciate it and right around 900 people have viewed our blog in a little over a month. While we certainly aren't the first school to do this, it is a step in the right direction. As more schools begin to use social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook, the intent is to get more information about what is taking place inside the walls of the school to the people on the outside.

While getting information out is great, it also creates a quandary for me. My goal as high school principal (I would say our entire administration) is to create relationships and a steady flow of communication between the school and it's stakeholders (community members, parents, and students). The only issue is that our blog is a one way flow of information. While we are providing you with greater access to our school, we are not allowing ourselves greater access to you.

Our district administration conducted a couple of meetings with some parents during the last couple of weeks. The ideas that came from these meetings have given us food for thought and even helped to clarify our future path. What is a shame is that over 850 people could have been using this tool to help provide suggestions, directions, or even just sent in a comment and I haven't asked you to do so.

At this bottom of each post, you will see my email address. Feel free to contact me and comment on some of my posts and offer suggestions and give input. While I might not respond to each, I will certainly take the time to look at it. This blog or tool can be a source of conversation that will allow us to improve our school instead of me simply pushing out more information.

The days of one person making all decisions are long gone. As a team, we can make the best decisions for all of our kids. Through our blog or in emails, through phone calls or face to face meetings, we want you to learn what we value and what we are thinking. Mostly, we want you to trust that your child in good hands while at our school. We can only do that if we use the best form of social media there is.....conversation.

I can't wait to hear from you.

This Week at MTHS

This week will be another busy week, but it will have a unique twist. As some of you might be aware, this is Random Acts of Kindness Week. We will encourage our kids to participate and follow what occurs on each day. For each random act they perform, they will put a sticky note by our Indian in the student area.

This week is also go college week! We will be celebrating by having a "Go College Night", a "Wear Your School Color's Day" (wear seniors will wear a TShirt for their school), and "Signing Day" (where seniors will sign a banner for everyone to see their commitment to going and finishing school, which will be posted in the hall) Here is the rundown of this week with all events included:

Monday- "Saying Something Nice To Someone Day" We will also be having "Go College Day" at school at 5:00 p.m.

Tuesday- "Smile at Others Day" Our girls will travel to Cross County Gymnasium to participate in the 2-3A district tournament. This game is a game of survival for our girls, as we must win two games to advance to the regional tourney. Led by the Perry sisters, Marked Tree will battle Cross County on their home court Tuesday night at 8:00. Make sure you are there!

Tuesday is Valentine's Day. We will not accept any flowers at school until 12:30. At that time, all Valentine's Day deliveries must be taken to the library.

Wednesday- "Hold the Door Day"

Thursday- "Pick Up Day" and "Wear Your School Color's Day" Our boys will play in the semifinals of the district tournament. This is sure to be a good game and will play a vital role in seeding as our boys try put themselves in the best possible situation for a trip to the state tournament. It's the early game, so make sure you take off and come join at Cross County gym at 5:30. Have your seniors wear a shirt of the school they plan on attending.

Our band student, Brayden Smith, was selected for the All-Star Band in the state of Arkansas. He is one of the top 12 trumpets in the Arkansas All-Star Band and he will leave on Thursday to go participate.

Friday- "Make a New Friend Day" and "Signing Day!" A salesman will be at school to size students for letterman jackets. No money is required, but there will be two weeks from Friday to submit payment for the jackets. Please start saving now! Our Seniors will declare their intentions to attend an institution for post-secondary education on this day!

Mid 9 Week Parent/Teacher Conference

While this is the time the schedule for next week usually is uploaded, I didn't want this post to get lost in the shuffle. Last night, we had our Mid 9 Week Parent/Teacher Conference. This set of conferences started in the 09-10 school year. Initially, the response wasn't that good. However, over time the participation has grown and the numbers last night were tremendous. My job during the conferences is to have parents sign-in when they arrive. As you can guess, there are times when I'm away having conversations with parents and during that time, people didn't sign in. At last count, there were 71 different parents that signed in. In my estimation, over 30 parents didn't sign in because I didn't get to tell them. Our numbers were well over 100 parents in attendance. While that doesn't seem like a lot, this is growing by leaps and bounds and it's only made possible because teachers stay on their time and parents are willing to come be involved.

Together, we WILL make a difference. Come join us next time and we will push that number of 150 parents!

Mid 9 Weeks Parent/Teacher Conference

Parents,

Something very important is happening this week at MTHS! On Thursday night, we will have Mid 9 week Parent/Teacher Conference! We started doing this a few years ago and had experienced great success. Here's why we do Mid 9 weeks....

Traditionally, conferences were held after the nine weeks grading period had already occurred. So, how are parents going to fix a grade at the end of the nine weeks? While only semester grades go on transcripts, 9 weeks grades are used to figure that semester grade? When do you have the opportunity to fix those (9 weeks grades)? We just didn't think progress reports were enough. As educators, we wanted you to have a chance to come during the 9 weeks and visit with the teachers so you could make an impact, ASAP. Last Mid 9 week conference, we had over 50% of our parents show up! Please make sure you make plans to come Thursday night (from 3:30 until 6:00 pm)! Together, we can make a difference!

Tuesday- Sr. Boys and Girls travel to Wilson to play Rivercrest High School at 6:00 pm in the last regular season game. Come watch the Indians in their final tune-up before District Tourney! Our Jr. Girls will play at Riverside in the District Tourney at 5:45 in Lake City!

Wednesday- Our Jr. Boys will play BIC in the District Tourney at Lake City. Tip-off is 6:30!

There are many different categories that students can register to compete in, but I'm just going to mention the ones that our kids competed in. Ms. Lovins is doing a great job with this group, so encourage your student to participate!

Monday, Jan. 30- BLOOD DRIVE!!! If you would like to give blood, please come and check in at the office! Our Sr. Girls play a huge game at Walnut Ridge in their conference season closer which will determine their seeding in the district tourney! Tipoff at 6:00!

Tuesday, Jan. 31- Our Boys will tip off against Walnut Ridge in their season closer. This game will also have an impact on their seeding, so make sure you come out and support the Indians!

Thursday, Feb. 2- TLI Assessments. Please make sure you student attends! When TLI test aren't taken, students are pulled out of class and miss important instruction!

Why do we want to change our schools?

Most people are wondering…why are we changing what education looks like? What’s wrong with the way we do things? Simple. It needs to change because it can be better. It won't be easy, though. We, as schools, must begin preparing kids to work in a future that doesn’t even exist. But rest assured, there are things that will exist we can begin working on. In order to do that, we must change business as usual.

Just imagine, what if Microsoft would have stayed the same?

What if General Motors hadn't changed?

How much has education changed?

Don’t get me wrong, there have been some changes. But for the most part, the structure of our schools have stayed the same for the last 100 years. Students come to school, teachers impart knowledge upon the students, students take notes, and then a test occurs that is usually done using handwriting. Bet that would sound familiar to my grandmother! But that sounds nothing like a workplace!

So, what are some changes we are hoping to make on our school?

First, we want to keep our students on the cutting edge of technology because that’s what most work places revolve around. When I was in school, we had to memorize what was important. Now, our kids can pull out their cell phones and access any book in the Library of Congress! Technology is changing the way everything looks. Just last week, Apple announced iBooks 2, which will make books come to life. Students will see animations in their books, movie clips over what they are reading about, interactive chart and videos over a subject. How exciting is that? What’s the best part? Most of it will be created by students!

The second big change we want to begin incorporating in our school is collaboration. More now than ever before, the workplace revolves around collaboration and teamwork. It is how businesses and even our government functions. However, if you step foot into a school, you will see 5 rows of 6 desks arranged the way they were 50 years ago. Using teamwork to make a better product only makes sense. In today’s world and workplace, we call this collaboration. During my time as a student, it was referred to as cheating. That must change. Places of employment don’t check ACT or SAT scores very much. I don’t know that college transcripts are even examined for employment, in most places. The most important characteristic employers look for is how well a person will function as part of their team.

Back to a point made earlier, we can’t expect today’s learner to come into class, sit, listen, and not engage in the material. Passive learning isn’t what moves children forward. Just because a student can answer 20 multiple choice questions over a topic doesn’t mean they have mastered the material. We must begin making students interact with that material. We must make them active learners, leaders in the class, and let the teacher become a facilitator of learning, guiding the learning instead of dictating the direction of it. We need to be more dynamic and versatile.

Finally, we need to address the weaknesses of our country, state, and region. Northeast Arkansas is a hotbed for agricultural and industrial jobs. However, jobs in math, science, and engineering related fields are on the rise while jobs in other areas are declining. If we are going to serve our purpose and prepare our kids for the future, we must begin preparing them for these types of jobs and develop the 21^st century skills they will need to be successful in the workplace.

So, you want to know why Marked Tree High School is changing? It’s simple. We are changing because the survival of our children is at stake.

Even on the weekend, MTSD is busy!

Whew! What a busy couple of weeks! But just because it's the weekend, that doesn't mean MTSD is taking a rest. There are several exciting things happening today in our district.

This morning, our Gifted and Talented Teams from MTES are traveling to Little Rock to compete in the Lego Robotics competition. Also, the MTHS Community Service is working on their third project. After a successful food drive during Christmas (which fed 7 families), they are back at the nursing home spending time with the residents there. Also, several members of our band auditioned for and was accepted to All-Region band. Their concert is today at 2:00 in Jonesboro.

If you wasn't at Sr. Night 2012 last night, you missed a great event. The seniors who participate in basketball (boys and girls), baseball, and softball were recognized. The best moment of the night is when the Seniors took it on themselves to recognize a faculty member. In addition, we won the game!

All of these great moments are made possible by great kids. If you aren't involved in MTSD, you have no idea what you are missing.

Tuesday, Jan. 24- The boys will travel to Riverside to play the Rebels for two exciting games beginning at 6:00

Thursday, Jan. 26- FBLA will be attending the District Conference in Jonesboro, AR. Our girls team will travel to Monette to compete against the BIC Mustangs. Tip-off is 6:00 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 27- Our boys will compete against the BIC Mustangs at BIC. The games will begin at 6:00. Come watch our Indians in this crucial conference match-up!

College Goal Sunday!!!!!

Seniors,

On February 19th at 2:00 pm at ASU Technical Center, we will be having a College Goal Sunday! This is a one-day event to help students and families complete the free application for Federal STudent Aid (FASFA) and the Arkansas Universal Scholarship Application (YOUniversal).

If you are even thinking about education beyond high school, you will most likely need any financial help that is available. College Goal Sunday is the perfect place to get the help you will need to complete your financial aid application.

You will need to bring the PIN number from www.pin.ed.gov (our students have already completed this), your latest tax information for both parents and student, 2011 W-2 Forms, and Social Security Numbers.

We are approaching a critical time for our Seniors. At school, we have been busy getting them registered for the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship and making sure they are submitting admission applications for college. Please make sure you have your tax papers in order, as they will be vital during this process. Also, make sure they take the ACT!

Over the next week, I'm going to be posting links to various state universities and links to their admissions application. Please know that none of these are a preference to me, I'm just trying to pass along some useful information.

Why a Blog?

So, this is my new experiment. Why am I creating a blog for parents, students, and teachers? Well, there are a couple of quick reasons.

1. I want every person in our community to have access to me through some form. This will allow you to see what's going on at school, what's the big news, and even contact me. Whether or not you come through the door at our school once a day, once a week, or once a year, I want you to be able to see the great things that are happening here!

How else would you know about our "KAIT Teacher of the Month" Ms. Sara Garland? How else would you know about the STEM Grant we were awarded (see articles below)?

2. As we encourage students and teachers to use new technology effectively, I feel that I must lead by example. As a school, we want teachers to use EdLine to keep parents informed, but what am I doing to keep you informed? This is the answer.

How often can you expect to receive an update? Once a week. There might be more updates, but at least once a week. If you would like to receive an email notifying you of updates, all you need to do is enter you email address in the box on the right.

Congrats to our girls for their effort last as they challenged the Warriors in basketball!

Big News for MTHS!

On Tuesday, November 10th, Governor Beebe's Workforce Cabinet informed MTHS that they were selected among the first cohort of New Tech STEM Works Schools.

STEM Works is part of a larger effort to overhaul the ways in which Arkansas high school students receive STEM- science, technology, engineering, and math- education and to increase the number of well-qualified STEM teachers. STEM Works high schools are based on models that are known to be effect. One is the New Tech High School Model that integrate STEM education and extensive project-based learning throughout the curriculum. Project-based learning with a focus on STEM subjects will help students excel in the Common Core State Standards, which will be implemented for 7th and 8th grade students in the 2012-2013 school year and for 9th through 12th grade in 2013-2014 school year. The common core standards are calling for the schools to develop the 21st-centruy skills needed beyond high school.

The Workforce Cabinet is assisting Marked Tree High School with a grant award of $150,000 towards funding for our New Tech School. There will be a series of meetings to inform parents and community members of the coming changes.
